Here’s three more important things for young saplings to grow healthily
• Saplings need LOTS of water to develop a deep, penetrating root system
o We need to be soaked in the Word of God – not just a little sprinkling.
Deuteronomy 32:2 (NIV) “Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers, on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants”
Where does his teaching come from? The Good Book.
How will we know it? Read it
What does this have to do with being righteous? Righteousness is right standing with God, standing – that’s a verb. An action word. Action is doing something
1 John 3:7 “Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as He is righteous.” He is addressing us as children, youngin’s, saplings. We will be righteous just as God is righteous because he know his Word
o Conclusion: To be soaked requires three things: 1) a Bible 2) Reading it 3) doing what it says
o James 1:21-25 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what is says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says…but the man that looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does.”
Lack of strong protection
• Wood of young trees is not tough like a mature trees – on their own
o One can wrap a tree’s bark to protect it from harsh weather while it grows – but be careful to not wrap it too tight or else it will die
o We as more mature Christians can help those who are younger by wrapping them in protection of prayer – don’t smother them. They need room to grow and breathe on their own. They will never be able to stand firm on their own if you wrap them too closely.
o God will also wrap them – garments of praise, salvation, a robe of righteousness. He wraps them just as he wraps/wrapped us when we were younger.
Possibly need outside support
• You can stalk/stand a young tree if you can see that if cannot stand on its own
o Come alongside and help the younger Christians if you see they are having trouble standing on their own – they keep falling back into their old ways.
• Standing/Stalking if done incorrectly will harm the tree
o Ask the Lord for wisdom on how to help – if you’re meant to help at all.
o James 3:17-18 “Bu the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise of harvest of righteousness,”
We are meant to use the wisdom of God so that both we and the person we’re speaking with are able to produce good fruit later on in life. Don’t just blurt out what you’re thinking – you may harm them more than you realize
